A.O. Olorunsola
Director | Zoollahtam Engineering Nigeria Ltd

Augustine (Osten) Oluyemisi Olorunsola hailing from Kogi State Nigeria, a graduate with Honours Degree in Geology from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria in 1979, is a natural diplomat, extremely reliable and trustworthy. Apart from being a core petroleum engineer, Osten is a student of evolutionary leadership development, with great passion for integrity, professionalism, excellence, innovation, transformational change, coaching and mentoring. He recently completed a term as the Director, Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) being the chief watchdog for the Nigerian Petroleum Industry, a position he assumed in November 2011 following appointment by His Excellency Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Accordingly Osten accepted early retirement from Shell where he last served as Vice President, with responsibility for Shell’s commercial Gas and Power business across Sub Sahara Africa.

Osten spent his formative professional life with Agip-ENI where he sojourned in Lagos, Port Harcourt, San Donato, Milanese – Italy and Sophia Antipolis, Southern France, trained, developed and worked as Reservoir & Petrophysical Engineer, and later specializing as Production Geologist. In all, he spent 10 years with ENI. In 1990, he joined Shell Petroleum Development Company Limited (SPDC) at Port Harcourt as Production Geologist, and later succeeded to become Lead Geologist for all the Land Area fields. Notably, Osten headed Planning, Economics and Joint Venture Management for SPDC Eastern Division early to mid 90’s, where he coordinated and ensured delivery of strategic plans with sufficient coverage of all stakeholders, undivided focus on prioritization, cordial and seamless working relationship with the NAPIMS (NNPC). Thereafter, he was appointed as Petroleum & Development Engineering Manager for SNEPCO (Shell’s Deepwater business in Nigeria), and later assigned to Rijswijk in The Netherlands as Business Interface Manager (BIM) with focus on Russia.

In 2006, Osten returned to Port Harcourt to set up the much acclaimed Shell’s Opportunity Delivery Centre in Nigeria, a dedicated Integrated Studies group with core responsibility for Hydrocarbon Maturation, an industry first in Sub Sahara Africa. In 2008, Osten went on sabbatical to serve as Adviser to the Minister of Petroleum Resources in Nigeria. He eventually served two succeeding Petroleum Ministers and led a “Think Tank” that developed holistic, integrated strategies aimed at improving policy implementation and overall effectiveness of the Nigerian oil and gas sector. Osten played a most prominent in crafting the petroleum laws – the Petroleum Industry Bill – currently being debated in the National Assembly.

In all, Osten is one of the very few Nigerians who have performed excellently in the three core areas of managing the Petroleum Industry namely:-

  • Policy–as Adviser to two Ministers of Petroleum Resources
  • Regulatory – as Director of Petroleum Resources
  • Commercial Operations – in various roles with Majors (Shell and ENI).
